After the hectic challenge of our east end filmmaking marathon, Kino London returns to what is our bread and butter - the open-mic film night, the only regular film event of its kind in the city.

We descend once again on Vibe Live on April 27th where filmmakers will present their work, sight unseen, to a supportive audience. Popcorn provided as standard.

Hot on the heels of his new record release, we also welcome to the stage ANGRYDAN. He brought the house down when he played last year, and apparently 2010 sees him even angrier.

If you'd like to screen your short at Kino, here are our simple rules:

All films must:

- be presented on DVD
- be under 6 minutes in length
- have the 'Kino London' logo and screening number (17) in the credits.

Kino London: 'Guerillas in the East' Wrap-up

Well, brace yourselves people – this was a special one. On Saturday 24th April, Kino London went and had an affair with the East End Film Festival – the result of which was a three-day filmmaking challenge. 40 people took part - filmmakers, actors, camera people, editors, runners... the list goes on. Challengers turned up in droves for the screening on Tuesday 27th – for the first time, we were literally turning underage people away at the door.

We also had live music from one half of Kurtz – weaving a cacophonous serenade of ethereal and hypnotic avant rock and experimental noise; a definitely unusual departure from the evenings other pressing business – the films. KINO LONDON: GUERILLAS IN THE EAST

Kino London has partnered with East End Film Festival to lay a challenge at the feet of London filmmakers - a 3-day session of guerilla filmmaking with shorts hot and ready in time for our screening.

The challenge is officially under way, join us for the mad cap and inventive results Tuesday 27 April presented by the filmmakers.

The creative energy is going to set the East End afire with films, food, drinks, live entertainment and an opportunity to network.

Live music stylings from two-piece Kurtz. Bearded magazine described them as “lo-fi, grungy, ever-so-slightly-math garage rock heaven” but since that still sheds no light on the situation, you should visit: www.wearekurtz.com for a taster.

Kino London partners with East End Film Festival in April to lay a challenge at the feet of London filmmakers - a 3-day session of guerilla filmmaking with the resulting shorts presented at a very special screening on Tuesday 27 April at Vibe Live.

PRODUCTION MEETING: SAT APRIL 24, MIDDAY
Filmmakers are invited to take part in the East End Kino challenge, kicking off with a production meeting at midday on Saturday 24 April at the festival's Filmmakers Centre on Hanbury Street, just moments away from Brick Lane.

ANNOUNCE A PROJECT OR GET INVOLVED WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S!
At the Saturday meeting, filmmakers will announce a project they intend to shoot, along with needs of cast, crew, locations or equipment. Those projects will then shoot and edit over the following 3 days ready to be screened as a completed short at our Vibe Live screening on Tuesday, 27 April!

KINO BASE IN FILMMAKERS CENTRE, SUNDAY - TUESDAY
Kino London folk will maintain a presence in the Filmmakers Centre from Sunday to Tuesday to offer support and advice to filmmakers before the Tuesday screening. Filmmakers will also be able to bring down their laptops to edit in the buzzing environs of the Centre, which will also be home to a series of professional seminars and workshops from the likes of BAFTA, Warp Films, UK Film Council and Vision Pictures.

FREE TO TAKE PART, BUT SIGN-UP IS ESSENTIAL
The launch event is free and open to anyone who wants take part - although signup is essential as spots are limited. Pre-register your interest by emailing sam@kinolondon.com to get on the list for the production meeting with your name, field of interest, and whether you will be announcing a project or looking to join a team for someone else's project.

Spring is upon us, and so too is the aftermath of another great night of short films that was our March screening.

So what actually happened? As always, Laura fastidiously noted the evening's comings and goings and according to her we had 9 films, including one from our very own master of ceremonies Mr Jamie Kennerley - bravely placing the camera where his mouth usually is. Also, in the absence of co-host Sam, Kino regular Lewis Georgeson took the opportunity to flex his comedy compere muscles.

Kino London returned to Vibe Live on Thursday 18th Feb for another amazing night of popcorn, bagels, live music (courtesy of the awesome Victoria & Jacob) and short film fun.

KINO LIVE AT LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL: DEBRIEF

An audience of over 150 people jammed into Vibe Live on 13th Jan for the results of a five day filmmaking blast. Since it was a part of London Short Film Festival, our one unusual stipulation was that each film had to be screened with at least one soundtrack element performed live.

Filmmakers experimented with the live element in such a diverse and inspired way. We had live narration, dubbing, foley (toaster and kettle), a cellist and an soprano, to list but a few. Even the popcorn machine breaking down couldn't put a damper on proceedings.

Join us for a very special edition Kino London as we go 'Live' with the results of a five-day filmmaking blast. Every film screened will feature at least one live soundtrack element, whether that be music, dialogue or sound effects.

Musicians, actors and sound artists will be on hand to energise and complete the films, and the festival party atmosphere will be heavy in the air. After such a busy week of filmmaking, expect some letting-down of hair!

CHRISTMAS KINO - WRAP UP

Kino London brought the festive season to Vibe Live on Tuesday 15th December for the final screening of 2009. There were Christmas gifts galore handed out, crackers pulled and our biggest night ever with 17 shorts shown. Each of the 4 Kino London team showed a new film (it was Laura's first film ever!), and we were really excited to have Dan Smith back with us to perform live. A record 4 challenge films were handed out for either not putting the logo on the end or running over the 6 minute maximum length. Morgan-Jane Delaney is to make a film whilst blindfolded.
Alle Segretti must make a film inspired by "you and mum and dad before they were mum and dad". Laura Shacham and Owen Armstrong must make Friday night orgy and Cereinyn Ord must make Meatballs the Movie. Do what you will those, guys. 3 seconds or 3 minutes, it doesn't really matter, as long as we see you back at Kino with the results at some point soon.

It's been a fun first year for Kino, starting mini with our screening inside the Igloo at Southbank Centre, expanding into our monthly night, which we hope is fun for filmmakers and audience alike.

Kino 11 Wrap Up

Thank you all for making Kino 11 an absolute blast last night. It may have been our best one yet as we settle into our new home at Vibe Live with a much more suitable set-up. A screen was erected in the centre of the room and we crammed the space with seats, those who missed out on a seat found comfort in the cushions provided at the front.

With no programming done at Kino London, it is always interesting when themes do start to emerge between the films across one evening. At a previous screening we seemed to have been overwhelmed with a number of filmmakers who were really excited about love. Kino 11 it turned out was all about the music, with a number of filmmakers presenting either music videos or films driven by soundtrack.

This was only highlighted by the presentation of a new music video from Oddyssey before an electrifying live performance from Rosie Oddie, the band's charming, striking lead singer. Any fans must make sure to surf over to http://www.myspace.com/oddysseymusic or catch them at The Black America Exhibition at Shoreditch Town Hall on 26 November.

A number of Kino regulars showed up at the screening with some of their best work yet. These included Alle Segretti, the Stifani twins, Warren Chapman and Kino London organiser Samuel Hilton with a film he made in collaboration with filmmakers from Paris and Berlin from the international Kino network. Amongst the newcomers was Matt Edmonston, an audience member who happened to have a film in his pocket and decided halfway through the night that he wanted to screen it.

Two filmmakers walked away with challenge films owing to broken rules. Samuel Hilton will have to deliver a film on 'I thought you were my mother' and Matt Edmonston will bring us a film that 'recreates John Lesley's life story using puppets in a classic three act story where each act is 1m long.'

Filmmakers' raffle prizes saw Simon Horrorx and Gary Ashkam take home memberships with Prince Charles Cinema, Tom Dean, Alasadair Brotherson and Tim Hawkins got DVDs courtesy of Artificial Eye, and Alle Segretti and Matt Edmonston got double passes to Curzon Cinemas.

Thanks to all the people that gave up time to make the night work and thanks especially to all the filmmakers that took the plunge and screened a film.

ODDYSSEY TO PLAY AT KINO, 18th NOVEMBER

Meet Rosie Oddie. She's corkscrew-haired, bright-eyed and dirty-mouthed. She sounds like the raspy, cheeky cousin of Karen O and Amy Winehouse. Her band, Oddyssey, are a delicious, dangerous collection of art-punks who plan to re-write the rules of pop for the 21st century. Rosie demands nothing less.

Kino London's Open-mic film night returns Wednesday November 18th to our new home at Vibe Live, Brick Lane.

Here at Kino we believe in an open, competition-free platform for filmmakers to screen their latest work, and our monthly night is exactly that. We're open to filmmakers of all shapes and sizes - fiction, animation, documentary, experimental - and of all experience levels. We're an open screen for those who just have to shoot.

To take advantage of Kino London's open screen we simply ask that films abide by our very simple rules:

- films must be under 6 minutes
- films must feature 'Kino London' logo (or simply the words) + screening number (11) at the end
- films must be presented on DVD

Likewise to Kino compere Jamie, who (after a couple of beers) volunteered for a challenge film along with Emma Rozanski. They're to make A film where all the characters only see themselves in mirrors, reflections. Crikey!

PRIZES
In our prize draw Ben Slotover and Mariano Melman won an annual pass to the Prince Charles Cinema, and Howard Cohen and Michael Glass won group passes to the IMAX cinema. Thanks to PCC and BFI for those really great giveaways.

ANGRYDAN TO PLAY AT KINO #10, WED 21ST OCT

Very, very excited to announce that ANGRYDAN will be playing for your enjoyment at Kino #10.

Soon to release his debut E.P. on Mi7 Records, ANGRYDAN's offerings range from vocal pop to Glitch-core Drum & Bass. His live shows are totally unpredictable (he doesn't like to repeat himself, he says), combining looped vocals, beatboxxing, live guitar, synthesizer, sampled beats, and real-time dymamic FX processing. Whatever all that could possibly mean we shall find out on the night!

KINO #9 : WHAT WENT DOWN AT OUR SEPTEMBER SCREENING

Loads of you turned up at our September screening to break-in the new venue at Vibe Live. It was pretty steady until about 7:45pm, and then suddenly the room was packed. Popcorn queen Natasha couldn't believe her eyes when she turned up to find a real, bonafide popcorn machine sat there freshly cleaned and gleaming. Needless to say the popcorn tasted better than ever, no?

Thanks to Faith Millin and Alejandro Patten for their wonderful rockabilly-blues combo. They had the whole room tapping their toes.

Some challenges were handed out for not putting Kino #9 on the end of the film. Following suggestions from the audience, it was decided that Alle Segretti should make a combination of all three ideas pulled out of the box - A film about Battersea Dogs Home, From the point of view of a do' & A film in which all dialogue is thoughts. Ed Wiles is to make A film with the people from Kino, and Gerardo (who volunteered for a challenge, we might add...) will make A French film & A man accidentally walks into a cup of coffee (?!). Ed - are we to expect you with a camera at the next one?

Thanks to BFI Southbank and Curzon Artificial Eye for the giveaways we were able to give to those screening. We're a competition-free night, but we like to have as many things as possible we can give to those who take the trouble to bring their shorts down to Kino. We wouldn't be here without the filmmakers.

KINO #8 IS DEAD: LONG LIVE KINO!

And a good night it was. A brilliant turnout - standing room only before we'd even started. And a really good bunch of shorts, across the genres. We had fiction, documentary, animation and stuff shot on good old celluloid. Super 8 is as alive as ever! A top mix of Kino virgins and Kino veterans. There was a such a nice buzz in the room that we were all a little overwhelmed with how much fun it was. As someone commented after we watched Ed Wiles' film 'Yellow Ribbon', there was a lot of people who believed in love there last night.

Loads of great comments flying around about the Stifani Brothers' Reel-Life documentary, about a projectionist who finds himself no longer required as digital projection starts to become the norm. Warren Chapman's stop-motion Hat Trick also caused quite a storm.

Challenge films were awarded to Shamus Maxwell, Howard Cohen and Dominic Stinton. Shamus is to make a Story about a haircut, Howard The Map and Dominic A Fishy Story. TOMMY LUDGATE TO PERFORM AT KINO: MONDAY 24TH AUGUST

At Kino we try to bring you a live act every month that's truly exciting/moving/funny/sexy (delete as appropriate but to include as many as possible). This month's performer is yet another Londoner with bags of talent and more sexy soul than you can shake a stick at.

Voted by website slicethepie.com as their top featured artist of 2007 (out of 1000), Tommy Ludgate released her debut album Wall of Words in October last year. Since then she's toured Europe, performed for Simon Cowell and is tipped by Magic FM to be "one of 2009's bright new hopes".

We're really excited to welcome Tommy to Kino #8, sharing the stage with our band of indie filmmakers.

WHAT WENT DOWN AT KINO #7?

What a blast. The Horse Hospital was packed to the rafters on Monday 20th July. Way over a hundred people came down (and they didn't come for the free popcorn and free sushi either).

A cracking programme of shorts presented personally by the filmmakers. Not pre-screened and pre-judged by us - a totally open screen. Those screening, in no particular order, were:

In a spot about our international Kino brothers and sisters, Kino organiser Sam Hilton screened his film The Girlfriend Problem, which he shot recently at a filmmaking kabaret in Vienna. We also screened Casse Tete, a beautiful short by Filip Piskorzynski of Kino Hambu rg and Kate George of Kino Adelaide, which they produced together at a kabaret in Trouville, France.

Challenge films were awarded to Jesse Thompson (Party like it's £19.99) and James Lander (The same thing, but better). That's what you get for forgetting to put the logo on the end of your film (do we ask too much...). We look forward to seeing those films at Kino sometime in the near future.

Music was provided by Dan Smith (see picture), with an absolutely blinding performance which the crowd went a little crazy for. Some great giveaways from BFI and Prince Charles Cinema too - books, dvds, tickets and annual memberships.

GET COLLABORATORS FOR YOUR PROJECT AT KINO!

As well as providing screening opportunities the world-over, Kino is traditionally a facilitator of new filmmaking, bringing together the people, the space and the kit to help get projects off the ground.

So, at this Monday's screening, if you have a project that you need a cameraman, editor or sound designer for, if you're an actor looking for experience, a composer looking for something to score - whatever your needs or skills - you'll be able to take the mic for a minute and announce that.

No need to book yourself in beforehand if you don't want to - just mention it to one of the team on the night. Laura, Sam and Jamie will be there to greet you and chat about any projects you need help with and would like to screen at forthcoming Kino nights.

It's now a regular thing at Kino nights that we present one of London's best breakthrough artists alongside the films. So far we've hosted singer-songwriters Valentina and Milly Blue (both now signed to major labels), and stand-up comedian and raconteur Marcel Lucont.

We have no rules for the kind of act we're looking for - move us, excite us, provoke us - only that it be something that genuinely takes us somewhere else for those 15 or 20 minutes.

CHALLENGE FILMS HANDED OUT

Challenge films were awarded to three filmmakers who succeeded masterfully in NOT putting the Kino logo on the end of their film (we don't ask for much in return for an open screen...).

Ralph Colmar must make a soft-core vegetable porn (and that's soft-core please Ralph);
Segev Navon must make a film about birth (and not about death);
Olivia Humphreys must experiment with the 'Make him love me' potions that she explored in her documentary.

It can be 6 seconds or 6 minutes long, but the rules state that Ralph, Segev and Olivia must screen their challenge film at Kino before they're freed-up to screen another of film. We look forward to seeing the results!

Thanks so much to all who came down to the Horse Hospital on Monday 18th May and helped make Kino #5 an absolute blast. Almost 100 people showed for the short film action, beautifully supported with music from Milly Blue and food by Yo! Sushi.

CHALLENGES...

There were a few challenge films justly handed out for not putting the Kino London logo on the end of the film (we don't ask for much in return for a truly open screen). The audience decided that Sunny King should make a sequel to his hugely popular film Signs (apparently we weren't the first to ask him to do this...).

Grace is to make a short with similar visuals to her striking Bungay Pong (those who saw it surely won't forget it), only this time with a discernible narrative...

And, strangely, Ralph Colmar volunteered himself for a challenge (and why on earth not), and is now to make a live action film following the animation he screened last night.

All three are to screen their challenge film at Kino London before they're freed-up to show another of their regular films. Ralph's already promised his for next month. Whenever Sunny and Alexandra can make it back with the results they'll be very welcome - we look forward to it.

Kino #5: The doors are now open

We held a pretty packed event at the East End Film Festival on Saturday. It'd be fair to say that we were well and truly crammed into the wonderful old Routemaster bus parked up in Spitalfields Market (it's still there - go look!), the festival's Filmmaker's Centre.

We gave everyone there the run down on what Kino London is all about, screened some shorts we made at London Short Film Festival, and then opened the floor to new projects to screen at Kino #5 on May 18th. We're pleased to report that a handful of new shorts were announced - all to be made between now and our next visit to the Horse Hospital next month.

Paolo Genovesi, Siobhan, Alessandro, Nick (sometimes surnames are hard to come by...!) and Kino organiser Sam Hilton all announced a new short for Kino #5, and were able to crew up and cast largely from other people attending the event. Thanks to all those people that turned up and were keen to get involved in the projects.

And to those on the list - keep in touch with us. We may not have gotten details for all of you, so get back in touch with us to let us know how your project is progressing. If you need any help with personnel, equipment or just advice, maybe we can point you in the right direction. Don't forget you can also post on our Facebook page if you're looking for assistance. We have over 300 members and counting...!

Kino London at East End Film Festival this weekend!!!

Kino London will be at East End Film Festival this weekend for our 'Kino 5 Production Meeting'. We don't usually have production meetings for monthly screenings, but when the very cool people at the East End Film Festival offered us the very cool opportunity to host at the very cool filmmakers on a stationary bus in Spitalfields.

Filmmakers will announce projects they hope to make for 'Kino 5' on May 18th and will hopefully find a number of actors, editors, composers and all sorts there to help complete the film for the screening. We need filmmakers with projects alongside those who just want to help them. No skill level necessary, no pre-selection, if you have an interest in making films come along, the best way to learn is by doing it, no compromise.

The production meeting is from 3pm until 4pm, Saturday 25h April. If you want to come, register by contacting sam at sam@kinolondon.com, or if you are so busy you don't have time to register, come along and try to squeeze in.

The bus is located in Bishops Square in Spitalfields Market, London E1

Kino #5 is coming...

We're going to try something a little different for Kino 5 thanks to an opportunity provided to us in a partnering up with the East End Film Festival 2009. At Spitalfields Market, EEFF 09 is putting together a Filmmakers Centre on board a (stationary, or so I assume) double decker bus. We are being given this space for one hour on Saturday 25th April, 3pm - 4pm and we are going to host Kino #5 Production Meeting.

Kino #5 Production Meeting will provide an introduction to Kino London for the newcomers by Jamie and Sam and give filmmakers the opportunity to begin to develop projects for our mid-May screening. Projects that are intended to be screened at Kino #5 can be announced on the day and talent and resources can be enlisted in what will be a quite relaxed and informal event. From there on we will encourage and support all involved as they work to complete a film in time.

Kino London invites directors, writers, editors, composers, actors and cinematographers of all experience levels to come along and get involved. It doesn't matter if you haven't got your own project, volunteer to get involved with another and take the plunge. All filmmakers who want to screen at Kino #5 should come along to this production meeting to annouce their film project, even if that is a challenge film earned at our April screening. Places will be limited.

The same rules for films will apply:

- films must feature 'Kino London' logo + screening number (5) at the end
- films must debut at the Kino screening (after the screening you can of course do whatever you like with the film, including removing of the logo if you choose)
- films must be under 6 minutes-
- films must be presented on DVD

Concerns about time frame - whether you will have enough time between the production meeting and the screening - should be dashed. There is plenty of time. The films don't have to be ready to screen until Kino #5, 7pm, May 18th, The Horse Hospital.

We are happy to be returning to the horse-haunted Horse Hospital and look forward to seeing a number of returning and new faces. Look forward to more films, more live performance, more Jamie, less Sam, more amazing sound and projection and (we hope) more Spanish catering.

At the time all films from the production meeting will have the priority to screen though we may start to register films in the usual fashion after April 25th.

Kino 4 Wrapped Up

Kino London is very proud to be boasting that Kino 4, our first monthly screening, was a complete success as 9 filmmakers presented new films across the evening, including films from guests from Kino Sydney and Filmonik. The rest of the filmmakers being local to London Town. The venue itself, The Horse Hospital, was fantastic despite none of us catching a glimpse of the horse ghost that supposedly haunts it (or maybe you did, and if so let us know) and we look forward to returning there in the future.

In addition to the films themselves the night's buzz owed a lot to a fantastic live performance by singer-songwriter Valentina (www.myspace.com/valentinamusic/). The night was capped off with a filmmakers draw for prizes from Shooting People, the world’s largest network of independent filmmakers, with Tom, Carla and Oliver picking up prizes. Much love to Shooting People for their support (http://www.shootingpeople.org/).

We also wouldn't have been such a success without the much help thrown at us by a number of people. We would like the time to again thank Lola on the door, Owen on projection, the Spanish team on catering, Antonio on sound, and everyone at the Horse Hospital.

Now we can look forward to Kino 5 in May and we need the word to keep spreading to make sure that we can live up to the 'hard act to follow' screening of last night, so tell everyone you know and even those you don't. In the lead up to Kino 5, we will host a production meeting, in partnership with the East End Film Festival (http://www.eastendfilmfestival.com/), to give filmmakers the opportunity to begin to develop projects for the screening. Projects will be announced on the day and talent and resources can be enlisted at this quite relaxed and informal event. It doesn't matter if you haven't got your own project, join another and take the plunge. More to be announced soon.

We will also be looking for another live performance for Kino 5.Kino 5 will also give you the chance to see the challenge films that came out of Kino 4. Last night four filmmakers broke one of the very important rules:
- films must feature 'Kino London' logo + screening number (4) at the end
- films must debut at the Kino screening (after the screening you can of course do whatever you like with the film, including removing of the logo if you choose)
- films must be under 6 minutes-
films must be presented on DVD

As we do have an open mic policy, we do like it when these rules are followed and we do punish appropriately with challenging the rebel filmmakers to make a film on a subject of the audience choosing. Rachna will be making a film on happy emo kids. Natalie will be presenting a film on Girls Aloud Sherlock Holmes. Oliver will have a film with dialogue in a cafe. Peter will have a informative video for the British right.

just a few simple guidelines to ensure that no one is exploited,
- films must feature 'Kino London' logo and the screening number
- films must debut at the Kino screening, after the screening you can do whatever you like with the film, including removing of the logo
- all films must be under 6 minutes
- MiniDV or DVD

Now that the dust from London's very first Kino Kabaret has settled and the city is beginning to return to normal from being brought to its knees, when the locals are beginning to feel safe, we are very happy to announce:

Kino London's very first monthly screening, an open mic night for filmmakers, the very staple of a Kino cell, where local filmmakers come together to screen, watch, experiment and have a good time.

Quickie History of Kino

If you are yet to encounter the movement of Kino, let me offer you a brief introduction. Though I must point out that the story may be more myth now than fact, perhaps it all simply came from a short film I saw at a Kino screening at sometime, but I feel it is the best introduction I can offer. Additionally, to reluctantly steal from 'The Matrix', you can't know what Kino is until you have experienced it for yourself.

Let us start with the word Kino firstly, the word is not to be confused for the German word for cinema, but this is an interesting happening, and can cause German people to be perplexed. The word 'Kino' in the context for this movement is inspired by the Greek word, kine, meaning 'movement'. You can see that kino, kine, and cinema are alike, but different.

Kino is a short filmmakers' movement that sprang up in 1999. The word 'short' here applies to the length of the films that are being produced. It started in Montreal in the Quebec region of Canada and I will relate the origins story as I have been told but is mostly likely a myth - French-speaking Canadian filmmakers banned together in 1999 in fear that the world was going to end as the clock ticked into 2000. With a rising level of dread, the filmmakers decided that they should make short films for every month until the end of the world.

Much to their relief/disappointment, the world did not end but these monthly screenings continued. Not only did they continue but they spread to other parts of the world in the form of individual cells, each following the monthly screening format. Cells were founded across North America, in Europe, Africa and Australia. It has even been reported of a short term cell in Peru, and if the rumoured Kino cell in Istanbul goes ahead, that will mean, depending on which side of the city it is based, a cell in Asia.

The nature of the movement believed in collaboration, providing a space to screen films without worries of pre-selection and competitiveness. Anyone could be a filmmaker and everyone would work together to complete films and get them screened. This is nowhere more ture than during Kino Kabarets.

Kino Kabarets is an annual event done by each cell, in which the host cell brings local filmmakers (and often international guests) together to work to produce content for a screening in forty eight hours. Often with 3-4 consecutive forty-eight hour sessions and screenings.
